The Importance of Career Exploration & CTE
Increased Student Engagement
Nearly eight in ten elementary students report being engaged in schoolwork. However, by the time those same students enter high school, their engagement falls to 44%.
Disengaged students are most likely to experience chronic absenteeism, drop out of high school, and perform poorly on academic measures.
But when students can envision a future in a career that excites them, they are more motivated to engage, persist, and thrive.

Lower Drop-Out Rates and Higher Graduation Rates
Research from the Association for Career & Technical Education shows that students with concentrations in CTE graduate high school at higher rates than their peers.
A whopping 80% of students who drop out of high school wish their schools incorporated more real-world and experiential learning.

Greater Academic Achievement
Academic achievement and recognition alone did little to motivate most students. The National Dropout Prevention Center found that academic support only increases student motivation by 11%. However, when the focus shifts to career opportunities and development, motivation increases by 81%.
Career exploration allows students to uncover careers, discover achievable pathways, and connect their everyday learning to the skills employers demand. Students who engage deeply with career exploration and planning show significantly higher levels of motivation and academic self-efficacy. In other words, a career-connected student means a more motivated and higher-achieving student.

Sustained Career Success
Career-connected learning creates higher-earning adults. A Department of Education study tracking students for up to eight years after graduation found that those who concentrated on Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses in high school earned higher median annual earnings than their peers.
